The short answer
A virtual phone number is a real telephone number managed through an online service instead of a dedicated physical phone line. Its calling and messaging features depend on the service.
A real number, managed online
A virtual phone number can look like any other telephone number. The difference is how it is managed: an online service associates it with your account instead of requiring a separate SIM or fixed telephone line for that number.
The term does not describe one universal product. Some services offer incoming voice calls, some provide caller ID for outgoing calls, and others support messaging. Having a number does not automatically mean every one of these features is included. Read the feature list before paying.
What a HalaPhone number is for
HalaPhone offers rentals of available US and Canadian numbers. You can use an eligible rented number as your caller ID when making browser calls. It gives you a separate number to present to the people you call without purchasing another physical SIM.
Eligible rented US and Canadian numbers also have an incoming SMS inbox after SMS is enabled. This is inbound messaging only: HalaPhone does not offer sending SMS. Do not treat a rental as a full replacement for a mobile plan or an emergency calling service.

A separate caller ID can help you keep work calls distinct from personal calls, or give regular contacts a consistent number to recognise. A rented number can also provide a separate incoming SMS inbox when the service supports it.
Choose a number for the features you actually need. HalaPhone's US and Canadian rentals suit browser caller ID and eligible incoming SMS; they do not include outbound texting, a physical SIM or a guarantee of verification-code acceptance.
How to get a virtual phone number
After signing up, open Your number in the dashboard and choose the option to get a number. Search the available US or Canadian inventory, select a number and review the monthly price before confirming. Availability can change, so a particular area code or number is not guaranteed.
Rental is paid from your prepaid balance. Keep enough credit for the monthly renewal and for any usage you enable. The country of your rented number is separate from the country you call: having a US caller ID does not restrict your destination to the US.
- Choose US or Canada and check live availability.
- Review the selected number and monthly cost.
- Confirm only when you have enough prepaid credit.
- Choose the number as caller ID, or enable incoming SMS from the SMS tab.
Rental cost is separate from usage
HalaPhone number rental costs $4 per month, paid from your balance. Calls are charged separately according to the live destination rate, and received SMS costs $0.01 per message when enabled. There is no yearly rental option.
A low monthly number price is only part of the decision. Consider how much you call, whether you need incoming texts and whether the supported countries fit your needs. If prepaid credit runs out, paid features can stop; a number that is not renewed may be released. Keep important accounts independent of a number you might stop renting.
Compare live call ratesRent a new number or connect your existing one?
Renting gives you a separate number managed by the service. Connecting a number you already own verifies it for use as caller ID. Connecting it does not transfer your mobile service, move your existing texts into HalaPhone or cancel your carrier plan.
HalaPhone's existing-number confirmation is free, while active caller ID access costs $4 per month. Incoming SMS in HalaPhone is available only on eligible rented US and Canadian numbers, not connected caller IDs. Choose based on whether you want a new number or simply want people to recognise your existing one.
What to check before relying on a number
Do not assume a virtual number will receive every verification code. The sender decides which number types it accepts, and some services reject internet-based numbers. HalaPhone does not guarantee banking codes, short-code delivery or acceptance by a particular website.
Numbers can be reassigned after release. Before ending a rental, update any accounts or contacts that depend on it. Keep a permanent recovery method for important accounts and use a local phone service for emergency calls.
